Production of beer as such started in Pilsen in 1295 when King Wenceslas II granted brewing licences to city burghers. A revolutionary change in beer brewing was made in Pilsen in the 1840s when a majority of Pilsen brewers decided to found and construct a new brewery.
The Mestansky Pivovar ('Burgess Brewery') began brewing on 5 October 1842. The popularity of the Burgess Brewery beers grew enormously both on local and foreign markets. By 1859, Pilsner Urquell Pale Lager was already available in 35 large beer halls in Prague. By the late 19th century it was distributed to all major European centres from Lvov to London. Many of the Burgess Brewery beers were also being sold in America.
Pilsner beer became so popular that its production technology quickly spread throughout the world to those countries attempting to produce beer of similar taste and quality. The Pilsner-type beer gradually became the best and most popular beer sold worldwide. Yet today Pilsner Urquell is still the one and only genuine original.
