Poet's Leap

Freshly peeled grapefruit, an appealing minerality, and a hint of ripe pear define the 2008 Poet's Leap Riesling. Bright acidity gives the wine its vibrancy and a clean, underlying touch of sweetness contributes to a lengthy finish.

Wine Enthusiast

The Poet's Leap Riesling continues its string of outstanding vintages, once again exceptionally concentrated and complex. The high-acid 2008 vintage adds extra juicy vibrancy to the fruit, giving the wine an impression of dryness (though it is a bit over 1% residual sugar) and a dense, layered fruit component. A mix of old vine and German clones, this is a superb effort.

Score: 94. —Paul Gregutt, March 01, 2010.

Wine Advocate

The one white wine in the portfolio is the 2008 Poet's Leap Riesling made by Armin Diel of Schlossgut Diel in the Nahe River Valley of Germany. Medium straw-colored with a greenish tint, it offers up a fragrant nose of mineral, spring flowers, citrus, and apple blossom. Vibrant on the palate with outstanding concentration, it is just off-dry in a Kabinett style. It should evolve for several years and drink well for a decade.

For the third straight year, every wine in this portfolio has achieved an outstanding rating. For this, the credit goes to Alan Shoup who put it all together and Gilles Nicault who handles the winemaking on a day-to-day basis. Long Shadows is the brainchild of Alan Shoup, former longtime CEO of Stimson Lane. It is a consortium of seven different labels, each with its own star winemaker who has a 25% share in the brand. The concept is that each "?is dedicated to producing a single Columbia Valley wine representing a 'best of type' that reflects the winemaker's signature style."

Score: 91. —Jay Miller, October 2009.

Wine Spectator

Light and airy in texture, with beautifully proportioned pear, apple, tangerine and floral aromas and flavors, lingering on the just off-dry finish. Drink now through 2015.

Score: 90. —Harvey Steiman, February 28, 2010.
