AA Badenhorst Family Wines Secateurs Chenin Blanc 2016

SKU 43581

The Secateurs shape our bushvines during the winter pruning and are used to pick the ripe grapes in summer. The 2016 spent time on its lees in concrete tanks and old casks-this is an important part of the maturation and gives incredible texture and palate weight to the wine. The aromas are flinty with honey, orange blossom and white stone fruit notes. The 2016 vintage was characterized by a long ripening period in mild conditions and has the effect of good ripe flavors and slightly lower acids than in previous years.

Wine Review Onlinetaste this wine every year, and always brace myself for a downturn in quality, as it seems impossible that it could be so outstanding vintage after vintage. Yet, the downturn just never happens, and the 2017 is a stellar wine. It shows quite good density on the palate, with stone fruit and ripe apple flavors, yet it is also very energetic and nimble, with excellent acidity that freshens the finish and invites sip after sip. Very few white wines from anywhere in the world can match this for versatility at the table or sheer deliciousness.

Wine SpectatorBrightly defined, with delicious quince, persimmon and green almond notes forming a core that is threaded with quinine and white ginger details. A light touch of toast on the finish lets the fruit and minerality play out. Drink now through 2019. 15,000 cases made.
