If Chateauneuf-du-Pape's vineyards are best known these days for their great red wines (accounting for 95% of the appellation) mostly from the Grenache grape, connoisseurs will discern in the region's white wines the hallmark of a great terroir. Two parcels on limestone soil have been kept apart in the Clos de l'Oratoire vineyard to create a wine, as delicate as it is rare, that will delight those in search of freshness and mineral character.

Wine AdvocateTasted out of barrel, the 2014 Châteauneuf du Pape Clos de l'Oratoire des Papes is another classic wine for this estate. It offers textbook notes of raspberry and strawberry fruits, pepper, sandalwood and underbrush to go with Provençal charm in its forward, medium-bodied profile on the palate. It still has some tannin to integrate, but I suspect this will come together nicely once in bottle. It should have 8-10 years of overall longevity. Note that the blend is 80% Grenache, 8% Syrah, 7% Mourvèdre and the rest Cinsault.
