Skouras Zoë Rose 2016
Wine AdvocateThe 2016 Zoe Rosé is a 70/30 blend of Agiorgitiko and Moschofilero, unoaked and coming in with five grams per liter of residual sugar, a hair over the most common line for "fully dry," but only just. This is always a guilty pleasure. If you're into serious pinks that are dry, refined and all about finesse, that's not this. But its aromatics and flavor are so exuberant and so much fun, that it is churlish to dislike it. There have been times when I probably overrated it just because it was so incredibly delicious. It's hard to benchmark issues like this, which probably creates some inconsistencies. It is certainly a wine with some limitations and a ceiling in the grander scheme of things. But, eliminating my wine snob tendencies, this year reminds me again why I often swoon for it. That means it is sensationally filled with flavor in its youth, chock full of strawberries. The aromatics are also powerful and enticing, too, filled with red-fruit smells. It is true that I see it when it is very young, only a couple of months from bottling, and at maximum exuberance. What ultimately saves this, though, and gives it a chance to be just a bit more, is the freshness. The acidity nicely cuts through the fruit, preventing this fruity pink from being sloppy or cloying. Overall, this is simply a lot of fun every year. Drink it this summer and you'll be pleased. Drink it as young as possible, because this is a wine you don't want to calm down. Chill it nicely, too.
