Cuvee du Vatican Chateau Sixtine Chateauneuf du Pape 2011

This wine is a deep crimson colour. From the initial nose, the aromas are intense, offering unrivalled finesse and purity and explosions of crisp red berries, such as strawberries and cherries. A first impression of subtlety, slightly closed but delicately full-bodied. Soft and delicious on the palate, elegant, long and velvety, the wine is powerful and structured, with unrivalled persistence on the finish. This great, noble, pontifical wine may be enjoyed with a hare, a haunch of venison, a leg of lamb with rosemary and much more besides. It may be served now after at least 2 hours in a carafe, or may be left to improve over the net ten years.

Wine AdvocateMade all from purchased grapes and a blend of 70% Grenache, 25% Syrah and the balance Mourvedre, the 2011 Cuvee du Vatican Chateauneuf du Pape is a medium-bodied, slightly austere effort that showed better from barrel than bottle. It offers notions of underbrush, licorice and spiced cherries to go with medium-bodied richness and grippy, rustic tannin on the finish. It should be consumed over the coming couple of years. Drink now-2017.
