COS Pithos Rosso 2014
|Appellation||Cerasuolo di Vittoria|
Wine AdvocateThe 2014 Pithos Rosso is a little rustic in places with a rough entry followed by compelling aromas of dried cherry and cassis. This wine is famously aged in clay amphora that are buried underground to keep temperature and moisture levels intact. COS was one of the first estates in Sicily to use amphora for aging and refining its wines. It started a trend that has gained much popularity today. A wine like this does a great job of bringing you, the consumer, closer to Sicily. You really taste the earth and the vineyard here. Slightly smoky notes of ash and mineral round off the wine's fruity core.
Wine SpectatorFresh and harmonious, this medium-bodied red offers a vivacious mix of ripe black cherry and strawberry fruit, with hints of wild herb and loamy earth. Not over-the-top or overt, but there's an energy driving this to the chewy finish. Nero d'Avola and Frappato. Drink now through 2024. 1,900 cases made.
