Ruffino Brunello di Montalcino Greppone Mazzi 2012
|Region||Italy, Tuscany, Brunello di Montalcino|
Wine EnthusiastUnderbrush, tobacco, new leather, crushed herb and a whiff of mature plum lead the way. The juicy full-bodied palate is still young and taut, evoking ripe black cherry, crushed raspberry, licorice, clove and a hint of coffee. A backbone of youthfully austere fine-grained tannins and bright acidity gives it an age-worthy structure and balance. Drink 2020-2032.
Wine SpectatorAn earthy, savory style, with cherry buried in the mix of tobacco, iron and tea flavors, supported by a firm base of tannins and ending on a saline note. Best from 2021 through 2035. 2,900 cases made.
Wine AdvocateAlthough Ruffino is a huge name in Tuscan winemaking, it is considerably less known in Montalcino. The 2012 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Greppone Mazzi holds the estate banner high. This is a well-made Brunello with classic lines and bright aromas of bold cherry, spice and tobacco. Its personality is tame and generic perhaps, but the wine hits all the high points you should expect of this appellation. The bouquet is balanced and intense, and the finish delivers bright spots of acidity and good structure. This wine aged in large oak casks for 36 months.
