Quinta do Passadouro Passa 2014
|Brand||Quinta do Passadouro|
Wine & SpiritsA right, floral red, this wine buzzes with peppery spice, its tart blueberry fruit providing a counterpoint to the structure, making the wine feel gentle, touched with just enough sweetness to give it a generous, friendly grace. From Portugal
Wine SpectatorRed plum, boysenberry and currant notes are focused in this medium-bodied red, with details of herb, peppercorn and mineral. Grippy tannins add texture through the smoky finish. Drink now through 2021. 4,166 cases made.
Wine AdvocateThe 2014 Passa red is the winery's entry-level red, mostly an equal blend of Touriga Franca and Tinta Roriz, with 10% Touriga Nacional. About 30% of the blend was aged in used French oak for 16 months, the rest in stainless steel. For a wine at this level in this scary vintage, this is pretty nice. Like so many 2014s, it is rather dry, stern and serious, a bit different than its normal demeanor. As with so many 2014s, it made me wonder where its typical fruit flavor was, usually one of the selling points of this bottling. I kept it open for an extra hour just to see if it would show some fruit flavor. Some fruity nuances did pop up, but not many and not often, a very different feel for this wine. On the other side of the coin, the concentration is good for Passa and the structure is good, too. Some may love its stern and serious demeanor this year. It is a very reasonable off-vintage performance for this level.
