The 2016 Liatiko Dafnios was aged for eight months in an equal mixture of new and used French oak. It comes in at 13.5% alcohol. Sourced from the Dafnes area of Crete at 350 meters above sea level, this is a rather elegant wine in the mid-palate but beautifully structured and filled with flavor, although a bit washed out compared to the 2015. At this point (and I tasted them side by side), the 2015 is looking notably better than the 2016. It has the advantage of a year in the cellar, though. Plus, the 2015 didn't show as well as it did in this tasting when I first saw it in April-May of last year. It still seemed a cut above even then, though. The good news is that this 2016, as it airs out, shows not only flavor but complexity. The moderate tannins always provide support. This is always, as well, a precise wine. The lighter style and freshness make it a good choice for a summer red. Considering the modest price, it's hard to argue here. The only question is whether it is a good bargain or a fantastic one. At the moment, I lean to good.
