Jules Taylor Pinot Noir 2018
|Region||New Zealand, Marlborough|
Colour: Dark cherry red.
Nose: This Pinot Noir is generous on the nose, showing vibrant dark fruit aromas of boysenberries, mulberries and stewed doris plum layered with clove spice notes and hints of vanilla.
Palate: This Pinot Noir shows an impressive concentration of flavour. The wild ferment and extended lees maturation in barrel have added complexity and texture to the dark berry and plum characters found on the palate. The finish is dry with a nice touch of warming spices and subtle French oak.
Food Pairing: Rosemary and balsamic lamb steaks with roast beets with spinach and feta, or venison loin with caramelised red onion and tart berry compote.
The 2018 Pinot Noir comes from vineyards in Marlborough's Southern Valleys. Richer in clay/loess than the plains, this subregion produces deeper wine as a result-in this case, marked by bold aromas of black cherries and red raspberries, with an earthy foundation and hints of sous-bois and baking spices. For an entry-level Pinot Noir, this is an impressive effort.
This takes some time in the glass to reveal blueberry and red berry aromas. At their heels are herbal notes, like cocktail bitters, and stony, mineral tones, too. The silky palate is gripped by gentle tannins and filled out by nicely rounded fruit.
Cherry and berry flavors are charming and smooth, with hints of spice, green tea and cedar on the finish. Drink now. 2,000 cases made, 800 cases imported.
