Warmed crepes drizzled with red fruit compote; pink and white flowers; a touch of vanilla and butter on the expressive nose. The mouth is electric, with plenty of pepper and fresh ginger-powerful yet elegant, with notes of black and red cherries made frothy and creamy with a hint of bubbles. A tribute to the greatness of Ambonnay and certainly to the peerless quality of Egly.
A core of ground spice mixing with flavors of whole-grain toast, pear tart, hazelnut and lemon zest in this well cut Champagne, which is finely meshed, offering an airy mousse that leads to the refined, lingering finish.
The NV Brut Tradition Grand Cru, from the villages of Ambonnay, Bouzy and Verzenay, spent 40 months on its lees. Here the oak is a bit more intrusive, as sweet vanilla and spices seems to cover some of the varietal character. Texturally the wine is quite pretty, but the wine lacks just that touch of balance that makes the best wines from this address so compelling.
