Polkura Syrah 2013
Wine SpectatorPowerful and well-sculpted, offering a rich array of black fruit, bittersweet chocolate and tea flavors, supported by crisp tannins. The finish is minerally, with white pepper notes completing the package. Drink now through 2021. 4,500 cases made.
Wine EnthusiastComposed, cool aromas of marzipan, vanilla, boysenberry and cassis are touched up by controlled oak. This feels cushioned but with pop and tannic grab. Dark peppery herbal black-fruit flavors come with a chocolaty component, while this tastes of herbs and chocolate cake on a bold oaky finish. Drink through 2022.
Wine AdvocateI tasted two vintages of the regular Syrah, starting with the 2013 Syrah. It is a combination of fruit from the different blocks from their Marchigue vines in Colchagua, combining expositions and soil types (they have identified up to 14, mostly granite and clay-based). It showed good freshness within the ripe style of the project and clear varietal aromas of smoky bacon, violets and tar with some black olives making an appearance after some time in the glass. It matured in barrel for 15 months, and the oak feels quite integrated. 2013 was a high yielding vintage, yet the wine is full-bodied with fine-grained tannins and good freshness. This is the highest production from the winery, with some 43,200 bottles in 2013.
All sizes are 750ml unless otherwise stated.
