Grilled Food & Wine Pairing

Todays' blog post will take the mystery out of your grilled food and wine pairing.  Following this blog post ( Wine Folly blog ) by Wine Folly, our resident Somm Aaron has picked out some of his favorite wines to pair with popular grilled foods.

Steak:

Michael David Freakshow Cabernet Sauvignon - Aromas of Blackberry cobbler, toasted walnuts, espresso bean and hints of brandy. The wine is weighty with a velvet-like texture boasting flavors of ripe brambleberry jam, toffee, and dark chocolate mousse followed by wisps of pipe tobacco and mesquite which will pair just right with that grilled steak. Sale $16.99

Poppy Cabernet Sauvignon - This wine displays blueberry, black cherry and currant flavors with nuances of licorice, violets and cigar box all wrapped together with a dash of vanilla and mocha. Medium to full-bodied, well-balanced, with soft tannins, this wine shows tremendous dimension, with a seamless finish that lingers throughout the palate. Pair with dishes more on the savory side, lamb and roasted meats. $15.99

Portobello Mushroom Steak:

Domaine Billard Pere et Fils Hautes Cotes de Beaune 2019 -

The color is of a dark and purplish hue. It is marked in its youth by red berries (raspberry, Morello cherry).  Our wine expert thinks this Burgundy Côte de Beaune Red wine would be a match made in heaven with Portobello Mushrooms. Bon appétit!). $26.99

Domaine Jean Claude Thevenet Bourgogne Bussieres Les Clos Rouge -  The fruit tends to ripen early due to its excellent exposure. Pigeage and remontage are practiced during fermentation. This wine is marked by notes of black, ripe berries, often a touch "sauvage". $22.99

Beef Kabobs:

Lapostolle Carmenere Cuvee Alexander - Made with Organic grapes This Intense purple red wine has a complex nose with red and black fruit such as maqui berry and spices such as red pepper, vanilla and dill. Flavors of fruit such as sarsaparilla and maqui berry. Medium long finish. Would also pair well with empanadas!  $24.99

Cheeseburger:

Baracchi Sangiovese - Intense ruby red color. The nose reveals typical aromas of violet and cherry. Spicy notes of juniper berries and balsamic hints. Very important body but fresh at the same time, firm tannins and very long aftertaste of red fruit. Floral finish. $23.99

Poggio del Moro Chianti Coli Sensi Riserva - The impeccably framed and carefully refined vibrant acidity of the Sangiovese grapes brings a wonderful, gentle liveliness to the mouth. Medium to full-body, it embraces smooth, sweetly polished tannins that make this CHIANTI COLLI SENESI RISERVA a deliciously eloquent, mouthwatering everyday wine with an elegant, silky-textured palate. $25.99

Chicken:

90+ Cellars Lambrusco - Deep purple-red in color, with aromas of fresh strawberries and violets. Take a sip and a light touch of effervescence accompanied by flavors of plum and wild berries emerge. This refreshing, versatile wine pairs fantastically with the grilled chicken or the heartiest cured meats and aged cheeses. $13.99

Salmon:

Alexander Valley Sangiovese Rose  - Aromas of guava, strawberry, watermelon, raspberry and mint explode out of the glass, while the flavors of watermelon, strawberry, peach, grapefruit along with a nice minerality keep you coming back for another sip. Food Pairing: Grilled salmon, shrimp or chicken tacos, salads with lemon vinaigrette or a Thai inspired curry with coconut milk, lime and mint. For a unique pairing try it with a spicy gumbo. $14.99

Brats:

Berger Zweigelt - The Berger liter of Zweigelt is an unbelievable value red wine. Made in the same style as the Grüner, but aged for an additional year. Juicy and bright, Berger's Zweigelt is loaded with crunchy red fruit, tart cherry, and cranberry. Excellent as is or served a touch cooler than cellar temperature.  $14.99

Grilled Oysters:

Nora Albarino - It has a bright, straw-yellow color with green shades and a high aromatic intensity. Fruity, with notes of pear and white flowers, such as honeysuckle. Albariño's varietal aromas and the mineral character of the soil are emphasized in this wine. On the palate, it is a well-structured, full-bodied and elegant wine in which its aging in the bottle is present. $18.99

Nortico Alvarinho - Creamy citrus oil, lime and yellow apple notes are nicely spiced and detailed with saline mineral and floral underpinnings through the long finish.  $13.99

Grilled Corn:

Browne Chardonnay - Aromatics of butterscotch and apple lead into flavors of pear, toffee and allspice. This full, buttery Chardonnay is perfectly integrated with oak and fruit to provide a long sweet vanilla, toasty oak and Asian pear driven finish. The wine should be served at room temperature or slightly chilled - too cold and you will mute the beautiful flavors and aromas. In addition to grilled corn this wine will also pair well with buttery and or cream-based sauces and fatty fish like salmon. $24.99

Valley of the Moon Chardonnay - Aromas of peach, apricot and vanilla. Flavors of crisp green apple, ripe pear and honey with a lengthy oak driven finish touched by a hint of sweet and bright citrus. $14.99
