Castello di Camigliano Brunello di Montalcino 2014
|Region||Italy, Tuscany, Brunello di Montalcino|
|Brand||Castello di Camigliano|
Very beautiful and perfumed with floral and fresh cherry character. Medium-bodied, silky and creamy with a lovely finish. Drink now.
Overall, this red is balanced, with cherry, plum, iron and earth notes forming a ripe, sweet center to offset the solid, dusty tannins. Finishes with freshness and a lingering element of fruit. Best from 2022 through 2040.
The Camigliano 2014 Brunello di Montalcino pours from the bottle with a lean ruby appearance. The wine offers mild aromas of forest fruit, wild cherry, bitter almond and grilled herb. Like other wines from this challenging vintage, this expression does not show the intensity or the depth that you get in the more balanced vintages. You do get attractive freshness for easy, near and medium-term drinking. There is a stern point of tannic bitterness on the close that may never fully integrate.
Underbrush, leather, violet and wild-berry aromas slowly take shape on this. The tight, taut palate is on the lean side, offering cranberry, licorice and espresso alongside assertive close-grained tannins that grip the finish. Give the tannins a few years to unclench then drink sooner rather than later.
Deep ruby; this strikes me as being darker than most 2014 Brunellos I tried this year. Aromas of graphite and flint also give a dark quality to the black cherry and cassis aromas and flavors. Finishes long and clean, with decent grain to the tannins, but this does not strike me as an especially successful or even typical wine from Montalcino. Camigliano's classic Brunello has been much better than this in recent years.
