Polkura Syrah 2016
Appearance: Deep red-violet in color.
Aroma: On the nose, there is lots of fruit. Red principally, with blackberry and plum.
Mouth Feel: In the mouth, it is silky despite its youth. It is well-balanced between its acidity and the sweetness of the tannins. It is an intense wine with good persistency and complexity.
A Syrah from the granite soils of Marchigüe, Colchagua, this wine established the house style of the winery. The nose is of raspberries with a hefty chunk of flesh, plum and balsam. This is a complex wine offering good juiciness and fine tannins with a lengthy, seductive finish.
Ripe, rich and powerful, offering exuberant flavors of blueberry, cassis and Christmas pudding that are matched to Asian spice notes. Dense dark chocolate and dried meat nuances emerge on the creamy finish. Drink now through 2025. 3,900 cases made, 450 cases imported.
I ended up favoring the 2016 Syrah, as I find more freshness here and better balance, which coupled with finer and more elegant tannins makes for a more approachable wine. It's varietal with clear aromas and flavors and a remarkable finish. There is 2% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Viognier co-fermented with the Syrah. 45,000 bottles. It was bottled in March 2018.
Cool, herbal berry aromas show a hint of cola. This Syrah is racy, narrow and compact on a linear palate. Flavors of black plum, wild berry and spice hit hard and are backed by coffee and herbal notes.
